I obsessed over the recording of my meeting with Sage, listening to it over and over again to find new evidence. There had to be something worthwhile in there.
The jetlag had me irritable and I was probably coming down from the weed party we'd had. It was probably too soon after sobriety to get so fucked up, and the crash was not going well. Gabe yelled at me almost the entire day because I was too slow-moving for him. And I didn't take it lightly, often shouting back much to his disliking. I'm sure he was counting the days until the spanko get-together we would have with the intentions of me being spanked in sorta public.
When Gabe had enough of my shit for the day, he sent me home, threatening another caning if I didn't come back with a better attitude tomorrow. Or at least get some of the work he'd assigned done.
This Winters case was always on my mind though. How was I going to figure out about this mysterious Pattie Cake? I had to start thinking outside the box.
So I wrote down all that I knew so far:
-Age 23-26
-From Lansing, Michigan
-white female
-Little/spanko
-physical appearance sorta from Fetlife pics
Okay, I really didn't have much. But how big could Lansing be? I searched the high schools there, finding out there's only 5. Well that could be easy.
A perp in the age range I had would've been in high school in 2010. I found yearbooks online and scanned through the pages, taking copies of the girls who could've been Sage's accomplice. There were so many that fit the description, but it's just a process of narrowing down.
Damn, wish I had coke, would make this research a lot easier.
It was Molly's night off, so she and Adam were hanging out in her room. I'd offered to cook them dinner and I needed a break, so I closed down the computer for a little while to absorb myself in cooking.
Half an hour later I called them to make their plates and we sat down around the table like a real family.
**dialogue with Adam and Molly**
Afterwards I went back to do more research on the names I'd found. My list was about 250 people long, so this would take a while. I was glad for my cafe con leche.
In the distance I heard a swat and Molly shriek. Guess they were gonna do that.
I glanced at the pictures and clicked on a random one — Chloe Peterson, senior, class of 2010. Another swat and squeal in the background as I typed the name into google, finding almost nothing. She was on the dean's list at the University of Michigan for two years, but then disappeared off any public record. No red flags. So I typed in the next name, and the next.
**one name will find a lot of info about that connects to the crime**
My mouth stretched open in a yawn and I looked at the time to see that it was already past midnight. At least my body was starting to get back on eastern time zone. I shut my laptop and crawled into the bed, checking my phone to see a message from Vic.
I'll be back next week — we've finished filming our special.
Damn, he hadn't said I needed to leave, but that was definitely implied. My brother and I couldn't share a room together now that we were adults, we'd be at each other's throats all the time. I definitely had to find some place to stay.
Groaning, I closed out the message and snuggled into bed. He didn't need an answer now. I'd cross that bridge when it gets here.
