The panic crept in as soon as I left Molly's room. It was a miracle that I'd been able to smash it down for so long after learning that we'd be going to Washington state... not DC. Wtf? How had I not realized that?
Violet had to be investigating Sage — who else would she be looking for in Seattle? And she'd mentioned that this person's calls are monitored... of course it's Sage! What am I going to do?
If Izaak hadn't just punished me for smoking, I'd be outside with Violet right now having a cigarette. The weed Molly had given me was nice, but wasn't calming my nerves at all. Anyway, the only reason I'd gotten it was because I'm going to be nervous af when Izaak picks us up, and he will definitely notice and question it. Weed is the perfect excuse. He wouldn't buy it if I just told him I'm afraid of flying since we've flown together before and I'm obviously not.
I splashed water on my face to try to calm my nerves, then laid in Violet's bed (or I guess her brother's bed?) trying to breathe like Toby had taught me. She came in with the familiar cigarette scent, which made me a little jealous. If anything could calm my nerves for a few minutes, it was nicotine.
But I'm moving past that. Best not to even think about it.
As she snuggled into bed next to me, Violet and I made a little conversation which distracted me for a bit, until she started snoring and then I was alone with my thoughts.
The window was cracked, so I tried to focus on the outside noises — sirens in the distance, wind rustling the leaves, drunk people yelling as they walked down the street, mopeds zipping through the alley. My heart pounded against my chest as my imagination threatened to show me how horrible tomorrow will be.
Toby flashed into my mind instead. Him half-jogging next to me at the track. His coffee-stained smile. The way he wanted to know about me, was curious about who I really am, instead of just letting me be what he wants me to be.
As my mind sat with Toby, my body finally relaxed enough to drift into a fitful sleep. But like always, the solution came to me in my dreams. I'm not sure what the specifics of the dream were, but when Violet's alarm startled me awake, I was a little excited. Wheels in my subconscious were churning. I'm great at faking it til I make it and knew I'd figure something out in the moment. At least I was going to be able to see my bestie again!
I tried to channel all of my nervous energy into excitement, but nobody bought it.
"Bro, why you so anxious?" Violet smacked me on the arm from her spot in the backseat, causing Izaak to give her a hard glare.
"Seatbelt on, Esperanza. Do not make me tell you again."
"Yeah, yeah," she mumbled, obeying with a sigh. "Should've just taken an uber. They ain't so bossy."
Izaak ignored her comments, focused on the nearly-deserted road. He was already dressed for work and super perky for the sun barely being up.
"There you are, doing it again — you fidget with your ring so much when you're nervous. Ha... I'm starting to get as good as the doc with this. Maybe I should be a shrink."
I looked back at her, taking a breath and bracing myself for getting in trouble. "I don't like flying."
"Whaaat for real? Why not?"
"Umm... humans are meant to be on land, not in the air. We're not birds."
My tummy dropped as Izaak looked at me, eyebrows suspicious. "No," he said flatly. "You're nervous about something else." He was stopped at a redlight and stared at me for a minute, making we sweat. "Spill it, kiddo. Did Esperanza badly influence you again?"
"Fuck off!" she said with a laugh. "It's not always my fault when others fuck up."
Izaak didn't react, eyes still on me until the light turned green. "Let's hear it, Chloe."
His tone was impatient and authoritative, prompting me to respond. "I... um... have something I shouldn't take on the plane..." The silence was excruciating, but I could see Violet out of the corner of my eye, smirking at the tension. She loved this shit.
At the next redlight, Izaak turned to me and said, "where is it?"
My tummy twisted into knots as I dug in my bag, exposing the disposable vape pen. He held out his hand and I placed it on his palm, shivering as I imagined the spanking I was probably going to get for this.
"Who gave this to you?"
Before I could open my mouth, Violet blurted out, "I did!"
Izaak knew she was lying, but entertained her anyway. "I should pull over and spank you right now."
"Oooo so scary. As if you'd actually do that."
She didn't know that Izaak liked a good dare. Without another word, he turned onto a dead-end street near a cemetery, parked the car and got out.
Violet's eyes widened as he opened the door behind him, climbing in, then slamming the door shut and reaching for her upper arm. He didn't give her time to protest, just jerked her up from the seat and tugged her over his lap. Violet sorta struggled, but by now was laughing because she really hadn't expected it to go down like this. The laughter resumed even after he tugged down her shorts and panties to her knees, but then the first flurry of swats made the "haha!"s turn into "ahh! Ahh!"s. Within seconds she was kicking and trying to reach back to make him stop, but he grabbed onto her hand and pinned it against the small of her back.
"I don't like your negative influence on Chloe," he scolded, now smacking her sit spots and thighs.
(lol damn gotta go make dinner now 💔)
